Jung53 (2017)
Most visual artworks have some physical evidence. This is not the case with Florence Jung’s art. Jung’s disruptive interventions put in question our perception of what is around us, in “reality” or in an exhibition context. In her performance Jung53 (awarded with the Swiss Art Award in 2017), hosted in ΑΒ6, a door is left half-open, drawing the attention of the curious visitor who might feel the urge to walk in. Then something or someone blocks the way, pushing back the visitor who is now made to feel like a trespasser. The annoying obstacle is keeping the door closed, while the frustrated visitors start pushing back. Is it a mechanical doorstop? An invigilator? The artist? Maybe a crew member on a repair routine? The performance challenges the limits of which of the three levels of truth are met: satisfaction, truth of the interpretation, and logical validity. What can be actually witnessed and what can just be mediated?
