Civil Financial Regulation Office (2018)

The Civil Financial Regulation Office is a call center installation operated by six persons trained and hired as agents to call up representatives of financial regulatory and policy bodies in Europe, e.g. the European Central Bank. This is done by using German tax payers’ money to create temporary jobs in the precarious services sector in Greece, paying according to German minimum wage, while agents call those institutions partially responsible for the dire Greek situation. The project builds a bridge between financial technocrats and impacted people in Europe. Non-expert citizens feel the right to demand good answers to pressing questions and get them, eventually. Technocrats are required to see through the complexity of their own field of expertise and are reminded of their ethical orientation.

The Peng! Collective was founded in 2013 and is composed of a group of activists based in Berlin. They define themselves as an explosive concoction of activism, hacking and art battling the barbarism of our time. At AB6, The Peng! Collective exhibits the Civil Financial Regulation Office, a call center installation operated by six persons trained and hired as agents to call up representatives of financial regulatory and policy bodies in Europe. In this framework, the Peng! talks about their practice, how they explore creative means of protest and challenge mainstream mindsets with subversive direct actions and civil disobedience.
