Korakrit Arunanondchai’s and Alex Gvojic’s film piles up the layers of a nightmarish yet mesmerizing world filled with attractive relics and sympathetic rats. In 2023, there was a global extinction day. The iconic big rat is the last surviving species, a compassionate guardian rather than a revengeful conqueror. The big rat is the hero’s alter ego, his friend, his parents, the ultimate interlocutor. In the mud, our hero is transubstantiated into a big rat, which comes out of a platonic cave into a post-apocalyptic mashed-up hazard, a post-digital planet of desert and paranoid drones. The digital present fades into a dry future. The 2016 dubbed and remixed songs, with the Vocoder-style yells, offer their place to a post-2023 manifesto delivered by the artist to the sympathetic rat. The manifesto promises art as the amplification of “what makes us human”—humanism transvaluated as radical cosplay on Alpha Centauri. In the “let the song hold us” sculptural variation of the piece, the hugging rat welcomes the visitor.
